He is working! And, for the most part Christopher is loving it. A few weeks ago the base announced their summer hire program. Christopher asked if he could apply and of course Ian and I said yes. We want him to understand economics. The best way to do that, is to allow him to earn his own money and figure out how to spend it. He sat for his interview. And, let me just say. I am not sure I could have done as well as he did. He interviewed with 7 people. Most of them managers here. Managers of the Harbor View (our restaurant on base), the youth center, the child development center. Fleet and Family center, and a couple of others. Christopher did an amazing job! He was offered a job at the Child Development Center. He attended the training, opened a bank account and off to work he went.
Christopher spends his days with preschoolers. Little 4 and 5 your olds, all with a ton of energy. He comes home tired, hungry, and with a dozen stories about his day. He really seems to enjoy working with the kids. And, I could not be happier for him. During his training he spent some time with a psychologist on base. The psychologist mostly went over how to help the kids who have separation issues. Some of the kids have a hard time being there all day. The psychologist gave him an old text book, and Christopher is reading it. A couple of days ago he informed me he has decided he wants to be a psychologist. Now, I am sure over time this will change, and that is OK. But, when I see my son getting up at 6 am during his summer vacation, spend his days with preschoolers, and then come home and read a text book I sure have to smile.. And, I sure hope there is a chapter in there for this eye rolling business...
When he received his first paycheck I had to laugh. He was shocked at how small his paycheck was. But, it should be WAY MORE than that! All I could do was laugh.. I remember my first summer job, and that tiny first paycheck. And, how I thought it should be WAY MORE than that....
Do you remember your first summer job?

And my first job was no different than my current one. Always too much month at the end of the money.
